  • Discover Chinampas

The Chinampas unique ecosystem was created by the Xochimilcas people centuries ago. By building floating rafts and filling them with soil from the bottom of the lake, the inhabitants were able to grow food and build houses on top of them. After many years, they were able to navigate among the channels to trade their products. These food systems are still in place in the south of Mexico City. We will travel by canoe to visit a chinampa and learn how local farmers grow their gardens organically, then enjoy a delicious lunch with them. We will see a variety of local and migrant birds that thrive thanks to the protection of this sanctuary which is also home to the iconic axolotl (salamander) that is endemic to this ecosystem.

  • Explore

In addition to visiting the chinampas we will also journey to the Huizachtepetl known as the Mountain of the Star where we will ascend to the top for a panoramic view of the city. On this site there is an ancient pyramid, where local people celebrated the Fuego Nuevo (New Fire) Ceremony every 52 years. During this ceremony, people from around the country gathered to receive the fire that they would bring back to their villages for cooking their food and keeping warm for the next 52 years. In this way, the shared fire was a connector of everyone throughout the lands. This tradition maintains the renewing of the union of the people with the land and the cosmos. Hector grew up at the base of this mountain and spent his childhood exploring the cave system, running through the forest and finding ancient artifacts like spearheads and pieces of ceramic and is excited to share with you this mountain that holds a special place in his heart.

  • Cultural Celebration

The Eco-Immersion is a cultural celebration of Mexico. One of our activities includes visiting an urban garden were a collective of people are growing food and practicing sustainable techniques like composting and rainwater catchment. Our guide will show us how they have built these systems and we how we can implement these on our own farms and in our communities. This day will include a delicious farm-to-table lunch. Each afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore Mexico City on your own. Our lodging is centrally located in downtown, where you can easily get to historical attractions. You could go see Diego Rivera paintings, visit Frida Kahlo's house, purchase arts and crafts from local artisans, visit the many art, anthropologic, and science museums or the famous Zocalo, and enjoy the traditional flavors of Mexican cuisine.
